For many people, owning a horse is their dream. When they imagine what life will be like when they retire, they picture themselves in front of a beautiful home with a few grandchildren, a nice car, and a few beautiful horses.
However, many of these individuals have never owned a horse before. Most people who dream of owning a horse have spent some time riding horses, so they know that they enjoy that aspect of it. But just because a person likes to ride a horse does not necessarily mean that they have what it takes to own a horse. There are definitely a few things to consider when determining if horse ownership is right for you.
Some individuals who own horses have stated that owning a horse is not like buying an automobile. It is like getting married. In the same way that a couple will get to know each other before they get married, so horse owners will spend time with different horses to see if they form a bond. The longer they are with the horse, the better they get to know the horse, and the stronger their bond is.
Once they reach the point where they realize that this horse is the one for them, they purchase the horse and ride off into the proverbial sunset. Like any new marriage, the first few days of owning a horse have a honeymoon time. Everything is great. The horse owner wakes up in the morning eager to ride their horse, care for their horse, and everything seems perfect. They go to the veterinarian, or they go online and purchase any horse supplements needed to keep the animal happy.
However, after a few days, the reality of the situation sets in. The horse owner realizes that both they and their horse has imperfections, and there is a lot of work involved in taking care of a horse. In the same way that married individuals promise to stay together for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, or in sickness or in health, horse owners have that same obligation. Owning a horse means taking care of a living being.
If an individual feels that they have what it takes to form a bond with the horse, horse ownership can be one of the most positive things a person experiences. There is a reason why there are so many people on the planet who own horses, so many books written about the relationship between humans and horses, and why horses are cherished by rich and poor alike.
