IES is a combined three-stage competitive examination (comprising five tests), called the Engineering Services Examination (ESE). It is conducted by the UPSC for recruitment to the Indian Engineering Services.
- IES Exam is conducted offline.
- IES consists of two written exams and 1 personality test round.Students can check IES Exam Pattern further in this article.
- The written exam consists of 2 sections- objective paper and conventional paper.
- Both the sections of the written test cover the entire syllabus of relevant engineering subject (Civil/ Mechanical/ Electrical/ Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering).
- Date of notification for Preliminary Examination is September 29, 2017.
- There will be negative marking for wring marked answers in the objective type question papers.
- Medium of exam will be in English language only.
IES Exam Pattern for Prelims and Mains
There will be two written exams in the Prelims- objective paper and conventional paper-General Studies and Engineering Aptitude paper and Engineering discipline paper.
- Two papers will be conducted in two different sessions.
- Paper – will be of 2 hours and of 200 marks.
- Paper-2 will be of 3 hours and of 300 marks.
- There will be objective questions in the prelims.
There will be two papers in Mains examination subjective in nature which will be conducted in different sessions.
- The distribution of marks for both the papers is 300+300 (600 marks).
- The duration of both these papers is 3 hours each.
- The paper pattern for IES Mains only involves the change in the type of questions.

IES Personality Test
IES Personality test is the last stage of IES exam.
The candidates who have cleared the stage 1 and stage 2 will only qualify for the Personality Test.
A total of 200 marks are awarded for the IES Interview.
Candidates will be tested on the skills like initiative and intellectual curiosity, tact and other social qualities, mental and physical energy, powers of practical application and integrity of character.
