When you’re trying to lose weight, you’ve probably thought “I’ve been good this week, so I deserve this triple chocolate peanut butter brownie.” Instead of indulging, consider these “buffer foods” that feel like treats to quiet your inner saboteur.
Buffer foods aren’t necessarily going to be cheat foods, but instead are foods that are just “good enough” where a reasonable amount makes you feel satisfied. That way, you continue making good choices throughout the day and indulge in something only when it’s really worth your attention and calories. Here are some examples of buffer foods:
- Banana
- Protein or normal smoothie
- Frozen protein smoothie popsicles
- Two squares of chocolate
- Tablespoon of peanut butter or other nut butter
This is the opposite of telling yourself which foods are off-limits. Rather this is encouraging you to think about the foods you enjoy, but also being mindful of the minimum amount you need to feel satisfied. (Because let’s face it: There is a certain point when a food you love no longer delights your taste buds as much as the first or second bite do.)
