Is your acne, hair fall hinting at PCOS?

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder, in which a woman’s level of hormones are out of balance. This disorder leads to the growth of small cyst which leads to the hormonal imbalance. This silent disorder is faced my many women and the symptoms are often ignored. This troubling condition can affect you from head to toe and one should not ignore the signs of PCOS. Watch out for these 5 signs of PCOS, highlighted by Dr. Kiran Lohia, Celebrity Dermatologist, Lumiere Dermatology.

1. Irregular Periods

Many of us ignore it when our period schedule goes for a toss. We tend to ignore the signs, taking it casually and blaming stress most of the times. But, if your periods ae irregular for more than 2-3 cycles, something is wrong. And in this case, you must visit a gynaecologist and get checked for the signs. Often variations in the menstrual cycle are the first sign of PCOS, so never ignore this one!

2. Pimples

Getting acne as a teenager is not that scary. But if you still notice such persistent pimples, then PCOS might be the cause. Acne is again of the most typical sign of PCOS, so look out for adult acne. For better clarity, discuss this with your dermatologist or the gynaecologist.

3. Unexplained weigh gain

Weight gain is usually related to eating more and exercising less. But, if you feel that your lifestyle hasn’t changed a bit, then PCOS might be the reason behind your weight gain. People with this hormonal disorder can gain weight quickly and especially around the waistline. This is because of the insulin and leptin resistance, the two hormones that make your body store fat quicker.

4. Unwanted Hair

If you notice hair on your chin, neck, it’s time to get worried. This condition known as hirsutism mainly indicates PCOS. Here, even laser hair removal fails for hormonally stimulated hair. If you have such unwanted hair poking out of your face, do get a check-up.

5. Hair Fall

The hormonal imbalance can also cause hair fall. Women with a high level of androgens (male hormones) experience hair fall. The hair thinning is also one of the many symptoms of PCOS.
