Medical conditions that can cause hair loss as a symptom or side effect

New Delhi: It is just wonderful what technology can do these days. According to recent reports, a new ‘hat’ has been invented which can help people who suffer from excessive hair loss. The device will promote hair growth by stimulating dormant follicles to reactivate hair production.

Getting bald can be one of the worst nightmares for people who really love their hair. Hair fall or hair loss has become too common these days, especially due to the environment we live in, the food we eat, the lifestyle we follow and the kind of chemical-based products we use on our hair. This causes the hair to become weak, unhealthy, rough and dry, which leads to breakage and hair fall. Apart from these reasons, excessive hair fall or hair loss could be a symptom of some underlying condition. If you are experiencing excessive hair loss, these could be the reasons.

Menopause

Menopause is a condition where the female body stops producing reproductive hormones. Research suggests that hair loss during menopause is pretty common because of the hormonal imbalances in the body. Lowered production of reproductive hormones like estrogen and progesterone can lead to thinning and breaking of hair.

Thyroid disease

According to the British Thyroid Foundation, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can cause hair loss. The hair loss becomes evident months after the onset of the thyroid disease. The hair loss occurs on the entire scalp, and hair feel thinner and lesser in volume. Successful treatment of the thyroid disorder can help in regrowth of hair.

Hypertension

A study published in 2007 found that hypertension was strongly associated with male pattern baldness. It studied around 250 men, aged between 35 and 65 years. When variables like age, cholesterol, smoking, etc. were controlled, the results showed that people with blood pressure reading above normal had twice as much risk of baldness as people who had normal blood pressure.

Arthritis

Auto-immune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis can cause symptoms like hair loss. Sometimes, it could also happen as a result of the arthritis medication. However, it is not very common.
