This weekend, my friend asked me where she could find a good facial peel. After scouring the beauty shelves, we were not very happy with the lack of variety.
Chemical peels, which are usually done by a dermatologist, work really well to brighten the skin and get rid of scars. However, these can damage the skin when done on a regular basis.
So we decided to go to the kitchen and try out a few peels. She has oily skin so the egg-white peel worked well on her, while I preferred the yogurt-honey peel for my dry skin.
Facial peels promote overall skin health and remove dullness when used on a regular basis. I have found that home-made peels are a safer way to remove imperfections from the skin, and they contribute to a younger and brighter complexion.
Peels that contain lactic acid and antioxidants help to lighten scars and remove hyper-pigmentation. They also fight acne by exfoliating dead skin cells that tend to clog pores.
1. Egg white and lemon peel
This egg white mask is great for oily skin as it shrinks pores and tightens the skin. This mask also fights wrinkles. To make the mask, lightly whisk one egg white and add 3- 4 drops of fresh lemon juice.
Wash and dry your face and then apply the mask by dipping your fingers into the mixture and then gently rubbing all over the face. Allow the mask to dry for at least 15 minutes and then rinse with warm water and moisturize.
2. Yoghurt-honey-lactic acid peel
You can make your own lactic acid peel by mixing two spoons of honey with two spoons of plain yoghurt. Lactic acid is naturally present in yoghurt and it dissolves the skins dull top layer, while honey provides hydration. Apply to clean dry skin, leave for 15 minutes, and rinse with warm water. Use this mask weekly for the best results.

3. Pawpaw and pineapple peel
This is a soothing peel that removes the top dead layer of the skin. Mix an equal amount of chopped paw-paw and pineapple and one spoon of honey. The mixture should resemble a purée. Apply to clean dry skin and leave for 20 minutes. Wash with cold water. The fruits in this peel contain antioxidants which repair the skin and contribute to a smooth texture.
4. Tomato peel
This peel helps to combat dryness and sun damage. Blend a ripe tomato and apply on clean skin. Leave it on for 20-30 minutes and wash off with cold water. Use twice a week to heal damaged skin.
5. Apple cider vinegar peel
Apple cider vinegar contains acetic, lactic, malic, and citric acids which are excellent exfoliators. This peel aids in evening out the complexion. Mix one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and one tablespoon of blended apple. Apply the mixture to clean skin and leave on for 10-15 minutes. Use a soft cloth and cold water to remove the mask. Apply this mask at night as the smell of apple cider vinegar tends to linger.
When using facial peels ensure that your hands are clean and avoid putting the product on the mouth and eye area. If you have sensitive skin, avoid products that make your skin itch or tingle.
