Question
As a child I had a very high fat diet. I am worried that this may have affected my arteries (clogging).
I now try to eat more healthily and take exercise (three times a week).
Is there anything I can do to rid myself of the effects of 20 years of, what I know now to be, a very unhealthy diet?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I feel the damage has already been done.
Answer
We are delighted to hear of your healthy lifestyle. Although undoubtedly important, remember that fat is but one risk factor for coronary heart disease(CHD).
The causes of CHD are a combination of multiple environmental, behavioural, social and genetic factors.
Some of these, such as smoking, exercise, stress, excess alcohol, hereditary and infection we are now familiar with, but there will almost certainly be others we are not yet aware of.
Although you are unable to turn back the clock, don’t dwell on the past, but move forwards with a positive approach to CHD prevention.
