Face oils have a bad reputation. There’s always the fear that you’ll be left with a greasy complexion. Plus, if like me you’re partial to self-tanner, oil can lift the colour, giving you a patchy finish. No wonder when it comes to replenishing skin, most of us avoid oils and look to creams and serums.
There is much to be gained from employing an oil, though. Not only are plant-based varieties a good source of antioxidants, but they are lipophilic and absorbed more easily into the lipid layer of your skin, locking in moisture. Massaging oil into your skin also boosts circulation, resulting in a plumper glow. Despite all of these qualities, we’re still wary.
Enter Bobbi Brown’s Remedies, a collection that includes five ‘potent super-blends’ and targeted treatments. Two of these are, for all intents and purposes, face oils, but Brown has been clever enough not to label them as such. The Skin Clarifier promises to rebalance your sebum production and reduce oiliness, while the Skin Fortifier works to strengthen your skin’s barrier function, which is perfect for city dwellers. I’ve been using the latter for the past few weeks, and I can testify to its brilliance. It has single-handedly given my greige complexion a new healthy glow. For now, at least, the self-tanner has been pushed to the back of the cupboard. I’m a convert.
